Meghna Srivastava, 13, from Centerville Junior High, called the week away “awesome.” It taught her, she said, that science has applications in real life. “I learned a lot from the experiments and loved the hands-on aspect of the camp.” She added that the camp showed how powerful science can be and how the textbooks we read can come to life. Sarah Buzsaki, 12, from Alsion Montessori Middle School, said the week was a lot of fun and taught her how you can apply math and science to ordinary aspects of life. She especially loved the Wheel of Theodorus, which is a game based on the work of the Greek mathematician Theodorus using artwork to illustrate the study of radical numbers. Rhea Kerawala, 12, also goes to Alsion Montessori Middle School. She enjoyed the workshops, especially the art projects related to math. She cited the Topography Map and the Magic Squares as among her favorites. The Fremont Branch sponsored the three young women thanks to contributions to our branch from members. Mary Lynn Pelican and Radhika Mitra orchestrated this year’s Tech Trek. Radhika took care of the process of getting information out to the schools and assessing the candidates who are referred by their teachers. Mary Lynn was in charge of fund-raising and encouraged members to hold small tea-and-dessert get-togethers. These events raised a total of $3200 for Tech Trek. Rhea, Sarah and Meghna will pass along their perspectives of camp life and learnings at this year’s Fall Brunch held in September. The three girls affirmed that there were 85 girls at the AAUW camp this year. They came from many areas of Northern California – two coming from as far away as Eureka. Rhea, Meghna and Sarah were all very impressed with the dormitories they stayed in. “They were really wonderful: big, neat and nice. We had our own washrooms for two girls and even our own little kitchen,“said Rhea. The AAUW Fremont Branch started the Tech Trek program in 1998 and one girl was sent to camp in 1999. That girl is now married with a child and came to one of the tea-and-dessert socials to talk about Tech Trek. Sarah’s mom summed it up. “Tech Trek started in 1998,” she said, “and this year’s girls were born in 1998. How perfect!” |
