WHEREAS, “Pennies for Peace” is a program of the Central Asia Institute designed to teach children the rewards of sharing
and working together to bring hope and educational opportunities to children in Pakistan and Afghanistan; and
WHEREAS, it is critical given the world we live in, that children develop a sense
of giving and caring for others globally; and
WHEREAS, given that Fremont has such a high concentration of Afghan and Pakistani citizens,
it is important for our school children to learn about the culture of these areas
to give them a wider knowledge of the world and background of their neighbors; and
WHEREAS, a penny donated by a child in Fremont can open the closed doors of education
for children, especially girls, in remote villages in Afghanistan and Pakistan since
just a penny has the power to buy a pencil in those countries; and
WHEREAS, education for children and girls in developing countries can go a long way
to fostering peace and prosperity and broadening educational possibilities for all children;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Wasserman, Mayor of the City of Fremont, do hereby
commend “Pennies for Peace” and encourage the citizens of Fremont to support this worthy cause.
